What Is a French Bulldog?
A Frenchie is a funny-looking dog with bat ears, smiling eyes, and a sturdy body. As the French would say, “Il est bizarre avec les oreilles de chauve-souris, robust et avec les oeils qui sourient. C'est quoi? C'est le Bouledogue Francais!”
The French Bulldog traces its roots back to England. In the 1860s, French dog breeders imported some of these small bulldogs from Great Britain and bred them with French Terriers.
Countess de Chasseloup was one of the first royals seen with a Frenchie. Now, you can see these prestigious dogs with famous families like the Osbournes.

Appearance
French Bulldogs are a small and sturdy breed with large bat-like ears, a flat muzzle, and a pug nose. They have soft skin that is fairly loose, making them quite pleasant to pet.
Their square, flat heads are not as massive as the English Bulldog’s. Additionally, a Frenchie has a rounded forehead, which gives them the appearance of an active, muscular, and intelligent dog with a smooth coat.
Personality
French Bulldogs make wonderful companions to small children. In a family setting, these little dogs behave like children, demanding a great deal of personal attention and interaction.
Weight
The French Bulldog has two weight classes: 19–22 pounds (9–10 kg.) and 22–28 pounds (10–13 kg.). Anything over 28 pounds will be disqualified.
Health Issues
French Bulldogs are prone to eye and respiratory problems. They can be gassy, wheeze, and snore. These dogs also cannot swim because of their physique, so be careful around swimming pools.
Sometimes, female Frenchies must deliver by Cesarean section because of the puppies’ large heads.
Living Environments
This breed is sensitive to temperature extremes. High heat may cause a French Bulldog to have a heat stroke. This dog does well in apartments and without access to a yard. It can be fairly active indoors.

Buying a Show Puppy
If you’re interested in a show puppy, you must first deal with a reputable breeder. The puppy’s pedigree should include one or more champions in the first and second generations.
You should also familiarize yourself with the breed and its standards, so you know the qualities to look for in your puppy. Additionally, the breeder’s observations and recommendations will help you select your future champion.
If you’re considering an older puppy, you must make sure it has been properly socialized with people and not isolated in a kennel without substantial daily human contact.
Meet the Parents
Puppies are a combination of genes inherited from both their parents. As such, they will reflect the qualities and temperament of their sire and dam.
When checking out a litter of pups, you must try observing the dam’s behaviors with her puppies, the breeder, and strangers. The sire must also be observed if possible.
There are many scams on the internet. When buying a dog, please do not go off a picture alone. Have the breeder show you a copy of the pedigree showing ownership. Anyone can take a picture of a dog and say these are the parents. Please be careful.
